Disney’s DEI Employment Policies: Leading Industry or Setting Illicit Precedent?

In a series of videos, James O’Keefe of O’Keefe Media Group (OMG) has revealed allegations that Disney discriminates against white males in its hiring and promotional practices. Captured by undercover OMG journalists, Disney executives claim that that company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have institutionalized employment racism, which, if substantiated, would be a violation of federal civil rights law.

What is Title VII?

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a landmark federal law that prohibits employers from discriminating against employees and job applicants based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This law applies to employers with fifteen or more employees, including federal, state, and local governments. It covers various aspects of employment, including hiring, firing, promotions, compensation, and other terms and conditions of employment.

The Disney Tapes: Disney Vice President, Michael Giordano

In OMG’s first (of three) video release on Disney, Giordano says the company prioritize the practice of diversity hiring over qualification hiring of candidates; all to reach set goals for representation of ethnicities, disabilities, and sexual orientations. He further claimed that his department wanted to hire one individual who was half Black but was turned down for the job because he “didn’t appear half Black.”

“Certainly, there have been times where, you know, there’s no way we’re hiring a white male for this,” Giordano lamented. And, he added management was quite blunt in how they’d say explain it to Disney teams: “’There’s no way we’re hiring a white male for this role.’”

He further went to say,

“…They’d be very careful how they message that to agents.

“I’m guessing that there is a[sic] acceptable code word and buzzwords that are used to explain what they’re looking for. They might say something like, ‘We’re not looking at the usual suspects for this job.’

“They, you know, the writers and actors… You hear it all the time. Like, you know, ‘I’m looking to hire writers and actors who bring diversity. I’m not looking to bring on any more clients who are white.’”

The Disney Tapes: Dave Makker, Director, Production Finance

In the third video of the series, another Disney executive, Dave Makker, is captured on camera revealing that his department maintains a spreadsheet specifically designed to track DEI employment goals. Makker also alleges that there is a glass ceiling at Disney, suggesting that career advancement is limited and that C-level positions are reserved for white Jewish men.

Corroborating Evidence

A recent internal document, released prior to Giordano’s allegations, appear to corroborate claims about DEI integrated into Disney’s internal business practices. This document reveals a deliberate approach to implementing DEI policies that favor diversity hires, likely at the expense of more qualified candidates. This document, as well as other revelations, fuel criticism that Disney’s dogmatic DEI strategy has compromised the quality of its products. Reviews of Disney’s latest Star Wars streaming series The Acolyte supports this idea.

More to come from James O’Keefe and OMG

Expect more videos to be released from OMG with further coverage on Disney’s internal practices. O’Keefe hinted that future releases may include revelations about Disney integrating LGBTQ messaging into children’s products.
