Country Club Republicans Look to Reprimand Mason for Making RINOs Look Bad

In New Hanover County, a political ambush is underway, targeting not a liberal adversary, but the county’s most conservative school board member, Chairwoman Melissa Mason. The local Republican Party, led by Chair Nevin Carr and driven by a shadowy internal committee, is pushing a formal 'Resolution of Condemnation' on Monday, March 3rd — a political stunt designed to publicly shame Mason for supposedly abandoning conservative values. But the pinch doesn’t match the ouch — the punishment is wildly disproportionate to the alleged offense, and the evidence for her supposed betrayal evaporates under scrutiny. What’s left is a troubling picture of a party more interested in controlling its elected officials than celebrating conservative victories.

A Resolution with One Goal: Crush Independent Conservatives

The resolution, drafted by the party’s secretive Motions and Procedures Committee, levels a series of broad and unsubstantiated claims against Mason. It accuses her of placing “hardline liberals” in influential positions, thus putting children “at significant risk.” Yet the document never specifies what those risks are — nor does it explain how Mason’s actions could possibly endanger students when the committees in question are purely advisory and hold no actual voting power.

One of the primary grievances appears to stem from Mason’s decision to appoint Democratic board member Tim Merrick as chair of the district’s Title IX Committee. What the resolution fails to mention is that this committee is already slated for dissolution, something Mason has publicly supported in board meetings. The appointment was procedural, not ideological, and because the committee has no decision-making authority, its long-term impact is practically nonexistent.

The resolution also conveniently ignores Mason’s well-documented conservative voting record. On high-profile issues — from eliminating DEI initiatives to removing controversial materials to terminating the previous superintendent — Mason has been one of the most reliably conservative voices on the board. This glaring disconnect between accusation and reality makes it clear: this resolution was never about policy. It’s about internal party control — punishing Mason not for how she votes, but for refusing to follow orders.

A Warning Shot to All GOP Candidates and Officials

This resolution sends a chilling message to other elected Republicans in New Hanover: step out of line, and the party will publicly punish you. This isn’t about holding officials accountable to conservative values — Mason’s record already aligns with those values. Instead, this is about enforcing absolute loyalty to party leadership.

Such a precedent could discourage future conservative candidates from running for office, especially if they believe they will have to choose between following their conscience or facing political retaliation. In an era when Republicans often criticize cancel culture for stifling dissent, this intra-party effort to purge one of their own looks uncomfortably similar.

Selective Enforcement and Double Standards

The resolution’s focus on Mason becomes even more questionable when compared to the inaction toward other school board Republicans whose actions have strayed much further from conservative orthodoxy.

Consider Pete Wildeboer and Josie Barnhart, two of Mason’s fellow Republicans on the school board. Wildeboer made and Barnhart seconded the motion to extend the contract of Superintendent Dr. Charles Foust, a vocal supporter of DEI policies and initiatives within the district — the very agenda conservative voters expected Republicans to resist. Mason, true to her campaign promises, stood alone in opposing the extension. Less than a year later, in July 2024, the board voted to fire Foust, leaving taxpayers with a $250,000 contract buyout — a costly consequence of a decision Mason tried to prevent.

Notably, Barnhart was inexplicably absent from the meeting where Foust’s termination was decided, leaving her position on the firing unclear to this day. She has never publicly stated whether she supported removing Foust or if she believed his departure was ultimately good for the community. The only comment she has ever offered came in a brief statement published by Port City Daily: “My goal is always to focus on opportunities for our students and there is still work to be done. I plan to work with board members to secure new leadership.”

Barnhart was also photographed attending a campaign event for Democratic candidate Nelson Beaulieu, a violation of the NHCGOP’s own Party Disloyalty clause. Yet no censure resolution has been filed against Barnhart.

When Barnhart showed support for Democratic candidate Nelson Beaulieu, it directly violated the New Hanover County Republican Party’s Plan of Organization, which defines Party Disloyalty as:

"...'Party Disloyalty' shall be defined as actively supporting a candidate of another Party or independent candidate running in opposition to a candidate of the Republican Party or a Republican endorsed by the County Executive Committee in a non- partisan election."

Melissa Mason Killed the GOP’s Own DEI Creation — Now They Want Her Gone

One clear example of Melissa Mason’s conservative leadership — and the selective outrage now targeting her — is her successful effort to dissolve the district’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, also known as the DEI Committee. In 2023, Mason introduced a motion to eliminate the committee, and the board voted 4-3 to approve her motion.

What makes the backlash even more puzzling is that Republican board member Stephanie Kraybill, who fought to save the committee, admitted some important facts. She acknowledged that the committee was originally created in 2019 by liberal-leaning Republicans, including Lisa Estep, David Wortman, and Bill Rivenbark — currently serving as County Commissioner. Kraybill also confirmed that all board committees are purely advisory — they make recommendations, but have no power to set policy or enforce anything themselves.

In other words, Mason was well within her authority to propose dissolving the EDI Committee, regardless of what the committee itself wanted. Her motion didn’t break any rules — it simply allowed the full board to overrule the committee’s own vote to keep itself alive. Yet instead of being recognized for following through on a conservative promise, Mason is being attacked for doing exactly what voters elected her to do.

Ironically, Melissa Mason’s record shows she is the most consistently conservative member of the New Hanover County school board. From opposing DEI initiatives to fighting for the removal of controversial materials and working to dismantle unnecessary committees like Title IX, her positions have consistently aligned with the conservative platform that Republican voters expect.

Mason also refused to participate in what some described as a public character assassination of a mother who challenged the inclusion of the DEI book Stamped in her daughter's high school Advanced Placement (AP) class. In contrast, some of her Republican colleagues used that hearing to personally attack the concerned parent, conduct that Mason actively avoided.

Secret Accusers: How a Secret Committee Came for Mason

Adding to the outrage is the shroud of secrecy surrounding the resolution’s creation. It wasn’t crafted in public view, nor was it authored by a single, accountable individual willing to stand behind their accusations. Instead, it emerged from the NHCGOP's Motions and Procedures Committee — an unelected, faceless body operating behind closed doors, with membership kept secret from rank-and-file Republicans and even from the Secretary of NHCGOP.

This veil of anonymity allows the party’s leadership to launch attacks without fingerprints, shielding the real authors from public scrutiny. Through independent sources, we have managed to pierce the veil of secrecy, and are able to identify at least three of the committee’s members:

• Reuel Sample, a local pastor.
• Nick Craig, a conservative talk show host known for hardline rhetoric on the air but supports the most moderate of Republicans.
• Samuel Ibrahim, a former NHCGOP chair with deep roots in the party’s establishment wing.

These three, along with other unnamed members, have effectively placed themselves in a position to override the will of the voters who elected Mason in the first place. With no transparency, public accountability, or formal checks on their power, this committee has granted itself the authority to decide who is “Republican enough” to remain in good standing — and who will be dragged through Maoist-like struggle sessions by the Party. The Motions and Procedures Committee's process drips with bad faith and seems designed to shield a handful of power players.

The Establishment GOP’s Conundrum: Mason Represents the Voters, Not the Machine

At a time when the NHCGOP should be focused on earning voter trust ahead of the municipal elections, party leadership instead opted to turn its line-of-fire inward. This very public internal feud over ideological loyalty risks alienating the very conservative voters they need to turn out. This is the same GOP leadership who couldn't get New Hanover County to carry Trump last November.

Mason has been a faithful advocate for conservative policies — eliminating DEI programs, removing inappropriate materials from schools, and fighting administrative bloat. To see her vilified by her own party is not just confusing — it’s infuriating. If even Melissa Mason can be branded a Party traitor, who is safe?
