Commissioners Unanimously Approve Pride Month Proclamation: Is the GOP Taking a Knee on DEI?

In a surprising move, the Republican-led New Hanover County Commission unanimously approved a proclamation to recognize June as LGBTQ Pride Month at their June meeting. The decision, which saw support from a majority-Republican commission, marks a notable moment for the county’s Republican Party. (Watch the video below)

“New Hanover County observes Pride Month to honor the history of the LGBTQ Liberation Movement…”

— Bill Rivenbark (R), New Hanover County Commissioner

The LGBTQ proclamation segment of the meeting began with Travis Corpening, Diversity and Equity Specialist for New Hanover County, addressing the commission. Corpening expressed gratitude for the commission’s acknowledgment of Pride Month.

Corpening stated,

“Thank you. The Office of Diversity and Equity in the community would just like to thank you for [the] recognition of this month, Pride Month. The Office of Diversity and Equity will be posting and connecting with the community for various resources. So, we just want to thank you.”

Following Corpening’s remarks, Commissioner Bill Rivenbark (R) read the proclamation to recognize and support LGBTQ Pride Month 2024. The commission then unanimously voted to approve the proclamation, including votes from three Republican commissioners. Notably, two of these commissioners, Scalise and Rivenbark, are incumbents running for re-election this year.

What is the LGBTQ Liberation Movement?

The LGBTQ Liberation Movement is a socio-political movement advocating for the rights and acceptance of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minorities. The movement aims to promote societal acceptance and address issues of discrimination, inequality, and violence against LGBTQ individuals.

Key Objectives of the LGBTQ Liberation Movement:
  • Increasing positive representation of LGBTQ individuals in politics, entertainment, and other public life areas.
  • Ensuring same-sex couples have the right to marry and have their marriages legally recognized.
  • Securing the right for LGBTQ individuals to adopt children.
  • Protecting transgender individuals from high rates of violence and harassment.
  • Supporting LGBTQ individuals seeking asylum and refugee status due to persecution based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Notable Achievements:
  • Legalization of same-sex marriage in many countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
  • Legal recognition of transgender individuals’ rights, including the ability to change gender markers on official documents, such as birth certificates.

Decoding ‘Queer’ in LGBTQ: Political Support for the Far Left, Marxism

The ‘Q’ in LGBTQ, which stands for Queer, is understood differently within the movement as compared to how people outside the movement view it. Within the movement, the term encompasses more than just sexuality. It’s considered a label for someone who challenges normal conventions across different areas (i.e., sexuality, politics and the arts) while supporting the broader LGBT community. Also, ‘Queer’ is often used by individuals to self-describe their alignment with Far Left and Marxist political beliefs. In the LGBTQ movement, one can be both heterosexual and Queer.

Supporting Sexual Orientation and Marxism

The NHC Republican commissioners voted to support all of the above. Do they really believe in this proclamation?

It’s not the county government’s role to endorse citizens’ sexuality. These types of votes have members of the Far Left snickering as they are securing Republican support for a Marxist agenda. If elected Republicans are willing to stray from GOP principles on these smaller matters, should the community expect different behavior on larger issues?

Elected Republicans need to stop acquiescing to leftist policy. This is how our country and community ended up in the difficult situation we’re in today. If these type of votes continue, it’s not going to get better. It’ll only get worse.
