Where Does Shake Shack Rank Among Wilmington's Best Burgers?
Every burger lover in Wilmington has a list.
Mention P.T.'s Olde Fashioned Grille and you'll find someone ready to defend it. Bring up Winnie's Tavern or Mess Hall and you'll get another opinion just as strong. The city doesn't lack great burgers, which makes Shake Shack's arrival more interesting than another chain opening.
The New York-based restaurant recently opened its first Wilmington location at 915 Military Cutoff Road in Renaissance Market, taking over the former Blaze Pizza space across from Mayfaire. For years, Shake Shack has built its reputation around smash-style cheeseburgers, crinkle-cut fries and hand-spun shakes. A national reputation can fill a dining room on opening week, but can it earn a place among Wilmington's top burger joints?
Only the food can do that.
After ordering the signature ShackBurger, cheese fries, and a Coke, I left thinking Shake Shack deserves a place in Wilmington's top five burger conversation.
A Smash Burger Worth Ordering
If you’ve never had a true smash burger, the concept is simple. A ball of fresh beef is pressed onto a blazing-hot griddle, creating thin patties with crisp, caramelized edges while keeping the center juicy.
Shake Shack executes that style exceptionally well.
The ShackBurger arrived with crisp edges that delivered plenty of flavor without becoming dry. The double patties stayed juicy, the American cheese melted evenly over the beef, and the lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce added freshness without overwhelming the burger. Every ingredient fulfilled its purpose.
It’s an easy burger to finish, which sounds like a small compliment until you’ve wrestled with oversized burgers that fall apart halfway through.
That attention to detail has been part of Shake Shack’s identity from the beginning. The company started as a hot dog cart in New York City’s Madison Square Park before growing into an international chain. Even as it expanded, it has largely maintained the quality that made the original location popular.

Shake Shack Prices Set High Expectations
Nobody is confusing Shake Shack with a value menu.
It sits comfortably in the premium fast-casual category, and the receipt reflects that. Order a ShackBurger, cheese fries and a drink, and you’re spending enough to expect more than a decent lunch.
Fortunately, the meal delivers.
The burger tasted fresh, the potato bun held together from first bite to last, and the staff kept orders moving despite a steady crowd. The dining room was clean, tables turned over quickly and the experience felt organized without feeling rushed.
The cheese fries deserve a mention of their own. The cheese sauce stayed creamy throughout the meal instead of hardening into a thick layer after a few minutes. They’re rich enough to split, but if you’re dining alone, they’re worth finishing yourself.

Wilmington’s Burger Scene Didn’t Need Saving
Shake Shack didn’t arrive to rescue Wilmington from bad burgers.
That’s part of what makes this new restaurant fun to talk about.
Restaurants like P.T.’s, Winnie’s Tavern and Mess Hall already have loyal customers because they offer something beyond the food. They’ve become part of birthdays, late-night meals, beach weekends and regular lunch breaks. Those experiences matter, even if they don’t appear on the menu.
Shake Shack isn’t trying to replace that history.
Its appeal comes from precision. The burger tastes exactly the way it’s supposed to. The bun is toasted the same way every time. The ingredients are fresh, and the kitchen doesn’t try to reinvent a classic cheeseburger with unnecessary toppings or oversized portions.
That’s the advantage of a company that has spent years refining one style of burger.
Ranking Shake Shack Among Wilmington’s Best Burger Spots
So where does Shake Shack land?
For me, it’s comfortably in Wilmington’s top five.
Not because it’s the newest restaurant in town. Not because it’s a nationally recognized brand. It earns that spot because it consistently executes one of the best smash-style cheeseburgers you’ll find anywhere in the area.
Would I put it at No. 1?
Not confidently.
Part of Wilmington’s food scene is its personality, and local institutions have earned their reputations over years, sometimes decades. They carry memories along with the menu.
But if someone asked me where to find a great burger this weekend, Shake Shack would be one of the first places I’d recommend.
That’s a compliment the restaurant has earned.
The exact order of Wilmington’s top five will always be subjective, and that’s part of the fun. Readers will have their own rankings, and I suspect plenty of them will disagree with mine.
Good.
A burger debate is supposed to end that way.
