Maoist Cultural Revolution Survivor: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is America’s Marxist Revolution

As a first-generation American, Xi Van Fleet has emerged as a prominent, and controversial, figure opposing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Her unique background as a survivor of China’s Cultural Revolution guides her perspective of this type of policy in education and corporate settings. Her outspoken warning about the Maoist Revolution repeating itself in our country is a message all Americans should pay attention to.

Who is Xi Van Fleet and Why is She Important?

Xi Van Fleet grew up during one of the most tumultuous periods in modern Chinese history—the Cultural Revolution. This socio-political movement, spearheaded by Mao Zedong from 1966 to 1976, aimed at preserving Chinese Communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional Chinese elements from society. Mao’s Revolution was marked by a significant breakdown of order, mass mobilizations of youth, and a widespread persecution of the perceived enemies of the state.

After experiencing firsthand the dangers of extreme political indoctrination and the suppression of free thought, Van Fleet eventually emigrated to the United States. However, over the years, she began to see parallels between the ideological rigidity of the Cultural Revolution and certain trends she observed in the American educational system, particularly within Diversity and Inclusion initiatives and social justice policies.

“We are in a Dire Situation,” Xi Van Fleet Asserts Emphatically

Van Fleet’s interview with Tucker Carlson has been one of most consequential he’s published this year. During their exchange, when Van Fleet spoke about the initial stages of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Tucker asked Van Fleet, “What was the moment you realized something strange was going on?”

Van Fleet answered by describing how the CCP dismantled institutions,

“Very familiar to Americans now, they dismantled the criminal justice system. No police, just like ‘defund the police.’ So, the Red Guards could do anything. No consequences. And eventually, they started to kill.”

When Carlson asked, “what advice would you give to Americans for how to respond to our revolution right now, happening in this country?”

Van Fleet’s answer:

“I would say, ‘[Do] you understand what’s going on? Only when you understand what’s going on you can fight back. Otherwise, you can’t fight something you can’t understand.’ …This is absolutely a full-blown Communist revolution. And the goal is very simple… destroy this country so some people can have total control of power.”

Xi Van Fleet’s Critique of DEI, CRT, and the Whole Social Justice Movement

Van Fleet’s critique of DEI is that these programs, while seemingly well-intentioned, mirror the coercive and divisive tactics she experienced during the Cultural Revolution. She speaks to these similarities as the fundamental basis for her comparison between contemporary Western leftist ideology and Maoist Communism:

  • Ideological Conformity: DEI initiatives promote a specific ideological standpoint that does not tolerate dissent, similar to the oppressive atmosphere of the Cultural Revolution, where only one “correct” way of thinking was allowed, and deviation was harshly punished.
  • Focus on Collective Identity Over Individuality: an intense focus on group identity within DEI programs undermines individuality. Collectivist systems tend to prioritize conformity and uniformity, discouraging individual expression and diversity of thought or behavior.
  • Suppression of Speech: the way DEI initiatives are implemented leads to self-censorship and the suppression of free speech. Labeling opposing views as inherently prejudiced stifles open and honest discussion, which is essential for a free society.
  • Historical Narratives: Historical injustices are presented within false DEI frameworks. Focusing predominantly on the negative aspects of history, and teaching falsehoods as fact, sows radicalization of students and societal division.
